October is a month of anticipation for me. I love autumn with its crisper days and feeling of change, and I always look forward to our Equestrian Artists issue with a degree of excitement.
Every year, I am delighted at the range of work we are able to include, and this issue is no exception. From Louise Mellon’s whimsical and brightly colored oil pastels to Ashley Collins mixed media almost-as-large-as-life renditions and Marilyn Fallon’s dreamscapes with horses, there is variety and something for every taste. Bronze, pastel, oil, watercolor – realism, impressionism, modernism – you pick your personal favorites (I know I did!).
We also preview the Washington International Horse Show, thanks to Diana De Rosa, and Erin Gilmore gives us a wrap on the Menlo Charity Horse Show out in California. I expect you’ve noticed that with the addition of Erin to our staff of writers, we’re covering a lot more of the California scene than ever before. We, of course are delighted.
Lauren Giannini visits with Bok Summers, Jt. MFH of Farmington Hunt in Charlottesville, and I especially enjoyed that interview since I started my hunting life when his mother, Jill, was master.
Jan Westmark as always entertains and offers insight with her ongoing On Course columns. This issue is no exception. Sarah Ward is off to college, Abby Westmark is making the rounds, and even Drexel is considering further education.
So once again, may I invite you to grab that cup of coffee and put the cat on your lap and settle in for a good read?
I hope you enjoy this issue of Sidelines as much as I did.
Until next time,
Cornelia Henderson
