Richard and Katrina Emmott were married in The Plains, Virginia in June.
Catching up: Peter Leone of Lionshare Farm was the on-air commentator for WVVT-TV at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. The former Olympic medalist took off his GPA helmet and donned his newscaster hat for the live broadcast of the culminating Grand Prix on Sunday.
Sidelines junior columnist, Sarah Ward entered the University of South Carolina as a freshman where she has been accepted to the school’s equestrian team, The Gamecocks. She will also continue to show in the hunters and jumpers with the Towell family on the A-Circuit, keep up her grades, write her Sidelines column, and try to get some sleep! At least Sarah won’t have to compete in one of her favorite classes, the Hunter Derby, against her own trainer Liza Boyd for a while since the soon-to-be first time mother is taking time out of the show ring until she and her husband Blake, welcome their baby girl into the world.
Olympic veteran Greg Best has returned to the US for his annual round of show jumping clinics over the summer. From what we hear, it was a grueling schedule filled with teaching and traveling – but at least it’s warm! His bride is manning his farm back in New Zealand, and it’s winter there!
The original owner of Elegant Estates in Wellington is back! Nanci Smith has reopened another fabulous consignment shop in the same great location in the Wellington Marketplace. The new name is “Consign & Design” and her Palm Beach clientele has filled it with some amazing items, as Madoff’s scam forced everyone to find an outlet for their high-end items. Be sure to check it out when visiting Wellyworld.
Meg Hilly tells us that so far this summer and fall, she’s rescued three loose horses looking for food. Seems owners are just turning them out to fend for themselves. Check out the link: http://www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org
Vicious, indeed: there are couple of blogging websites out there that have gotten completely out of control. The material and comments they post have gone so far that several very unhappy equestrians are now hiring lawyers, and are going to take these sites to task.
Rain, rain85 never mind! It was great to see that even the bad weather at Saugerties didn’t prevent trainers from flocking to New World Home Cooking Co. to enjoy a special trainer’s dinner hosted by Chef Ric Orlando. Federico Sztyrle and his group were the first in and the last to leave!
Gaypolo.com! Check out this website, and our Five Questions with Gay Polo League founder Chip McKenney in this issue. Yes Virginia, there is gay polo and we hear they are trying to get a team organized to come to Florida in the wintertime. Won’t this give a new definition to tailgating?
Susie Schoellkopf is now head of the hunter committee. She has revamped the committee members and put them to work. Guys, if you are on one of Susie’s committees you best stay on top of your assignments or she will be “all over you!”
Bruce Springsteen looked smashing in his Dubarry boots during his first UK festival appearance at the 39-year-old rock festival at Glastonbury attended by more than 175,000 people. The heavy rains of Thursday and Friday stopped for The Boss’s Saturday night performance, prompting him to ask the British crowd, “What happened to all the rain? I wore my boots!”
Exhibitors in Canada are very excited about the government’s commitment to do a major upgrade to the International Equestrian Center at Bromont. There also seems to be a lot of buzz about the new “Cavalor” bridge at Bromont. Everyone understands sponsor visibility, but some seem to think the blue is a little too much! We say that the sport needs sponsorship and aren’t horses supposed to be color blind anyway!?!
Looks like producers are interested in horse people again. Casting Director Sean DeSimone is putting out a casting call for young riders from either 18-early 20’s or 30-40’s. They want to follow you around in your “equestrian life tyle”85 No networks are named as yet. If you are interested in pursuing this you can send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
There is some serious “hanky panky” going on with one married hunter judge. Seems when he is away from home he “breaks bad”! Sounds like his wife needs a chain across his nose!??Nappy Tranter spent some time in Montana recently. She tells us it was a great trip and she found a 23 year old dude! And she passed him by – is she crazy?
The USET Foundation to going to be in a future issue of Town and Country Magazine. Well done USET, we look forward to the issue!
Kim Tudor has launched Tudor & Company: a new sports marketing and client management group focused upon high-end sponsor development for premier equestrian events across the US and Canada. Kim definitely has the know-how to do a great job for her expanding client list. Good luck to you!
The camper area at Horse Shows By the Bay has been more fun than ever this year. There are have been nightly kickball games (Tim Goguen plays kickball almost as well as he rides) campfires, s’mores making and a scavenger hunt that sent teams of kids looking through the horse show for things such as Peter Pletcher’s autograph, mementos from various vendors and fun things from the barn. There also has been some great American Idol competition over at the Spy Coast/Sweet Oak RVs. Rumor has it that Kaitlin Campbell and Kelcie Brophy would even get past Simon.
Bumps and Bruises: Editor Cornelia Henderson has to periodically prove to herself she ain’t as young as she used to be: a new prospective hunt horse acquitted himself quite handsomely with walking out with Aiken Hounds, only to later take the opportunity to do a “James Brown buck” –of the I FEEL GOOOD!!! – variety, sending her flying. Nothing except pride was broken, but the bruises are magnificent. Not to be outdone, Publisher Samantha Charles went one better: the half-gainer over her horse’s head resulted in a broken hand. Kiki Umla was supposed to be handing out ribbons at Lake Placid, but it didn’t happen. Kiki was standing on a chair trying to store some luggage and she slipped and fell. She is now on crutches and can’t walk, but she tells us she will be fine in a few short weeks. Ladies, be careful!
Wedding Bells: On a very sunny and beautiful day in May (23rd.), Patricio Muente married Antje Armbrust. ‘Pato’, the successful jumper trainer and rider and his wife Antje (daughter of Hans-Juergen Armbrust, professional dressage rider and trainer in Germany) celebrated a three-day wedding at the family owned breeding estate in Germany.
Memorial Day weekend is when Darrell Vaughn and Melissa Campbell tied the knot in Aiken. We are eagerly awaiting photos. Melissa and Darrell run Stable on the Woods. We must say, the nicest wedding present on record, nearly, came from Mike Rubin, who added an addition on their house for the newlyweds.
Richard Emmott, Huntsman at the Myopia Hunt in Hamilton, MA and Katrina Redmond were married on June 6 in The Plains, VA. Nine hunts from the U.S. and U.K. were represented over the wedding weekend which kicked off with cocktails at the historic Welbourne Inn in Middleburg.
