Letter from the Editor

July. Midsummer heat, sultry to sweltering, depending on your geography. Time to be making plans to head off to college, pack the tack trunk for the Hampton Classic or Lake Placid`85 or riding your pony across a meadow and into a pond. It’s time to start dreaming about the fall because it’s too hot and buggy to think about doing much riding. Right?

Hah! Now is the time to think about showing, and having fun, and maybe taking it a little easier. So with that in mind, here’s another jam-packed issue of Sidelines to peruse as you swing gently in a hammock, sipping some lemonade.

First of all, I’d like to introduce our new intern, Jessica Potts, who provided us with an excellent Five Q interview on the St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s team. We’re delighted to have Jessica ‘on staff’ with us in our virtual office, and look forward to many more contributions.

Pony Kids has proven to be one of Sidelines’ most popular columns, and in celebration of our second Pony Issue, we’ve rounded up six of tomorrow’s stars. I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about these great kids. I’m always struck by the answers to "Who are your Equestrian Idols." Often that idol is a parent, or a trainer, or a star on the Team. It’s humbling to realize that these little children are taking note of who’s in the horse world, and are trying to follow in some pretty big footsteps. Let’s hope we all try to set a good example in sportsmanship and horsemanship for the next generation.

Our little cover girl, Claire Jenkins is a rising star. At 10, she’s winning on the pony hunters, but we know it’s just a matter of time before we see her in the grand prix ring at the WEF. Jennifer Wood did a great job; we know just how hard it can be to interview youngsters.

Jan Westmark always charms us with her Lighterside column, and daughter Abby is definitely following in her mother’s footsteps. I envy them their shared talent for writing. Be sure to catch all their columns this month – On Course, Juniorside, and of course, Lighterside.

And speaking of the next generations, Jan’s Five Q with Mike Azzaro continues this theme. He sees a future for young American players if – and he does mean if – they are nurtured, encouraged and supported. Since we as a nation no longer are an agrarian society (and Argentina still is) he’s got his work cut out for him. Be sure to see what Mikey has to say.

Lauren Giannini is always running herself ragged for us, and this month is no different. Lauren was there to cover the Virginia Hound Show (a personal favorite event of mine), as well as do her usual stellar array of interviews. Lauren profiled two working students this issue, Lauren Sprieser and Jenn Januzis who both belie the current opinion that young folks expect the world to be given to them. Not these girls! They are an inspiration to us all.

For the eventing enthusiasts, Lauren caught up with Melissa Hunsberger and Amber Heintzberger interviewed Seth Tousey – both names to keep in mind as they rise through the ranks.

Bill Tatgenhorst gave us a nice overview of what to look for if your young rider is considering a college or prep school with a riding program. We want to congratulate Bill on his recent promotion to public relations/distribution director – and continue to encourage his writing skills.

Round the issue out with our usual columns, and you can hang out under that shade tree till the weather cools off.

Hope you enjoy reading the July issue of Sidelines as much as we all enjoyed putting it together for you.

Until next issue,

Cornelia Bernard Henderson

To the Editor:

A few weeks ago we went to watch a friend compete in a cowboy shoot, where we met a friendly couple sitting on two good horses sporting lovely hunter clips. Best yet was the amazing pair of woolies covering Anne Moss!
When he got to page 108 in the May issue, Jack thought the big horse looked familiar! The article was a good read and we both enjoyed the whole issue...well, I did, Jack likes the polo best but we do read it all! Is Sidelines about the only magazine that includes hunting & polo with the other horse show events?
Anyway I thought you might get a chuckle out of this pic, (sorry for the quality) of Anne in her woolies. For equestrian dress, she must have one interesting closet! Hope all is well with you.

Linda Epstein

Isabel holds a copy of Sidelines in the store she and her husband own in Spain

Even though we are far from the Spanish prime polo and equestrian cities like Madrid or Barcelona, here in the North of Spain there is a lot of horse riding. As we personally are polo enthusiasts, and would love to have this sport played here too, we have put in our equestrian and sportswear shop, a section dedicated to polo, and so in this way try popularize it. In our shop our clients have the possibility of reading an assortment of international polo and equestrian magazines, and it is a pleasure for us to also have your SIDELINES magazine in our display.

Kind regards,

Juan.
