Don’t ask! Marcella is as puzzled and excited as the rest of you As the Stirrup Turns in Wellie-world. She has a front-row seat, of course, and will keep you posted. Let’s just say it’s never dull, and Marcella looks forward to an exciting winter. But of course, with summer upon us, and all the fun of the MFHA Centennial behind her, and Lake Placid and the Hampton Classic to look forward to, why not find a shady spot and sip a big paper cup of horse show lemonade?
On the Move? Paul Van Dan Heever, who has 25 years of equestrian experience and training, has launched his new web site www.crosswinds.be . Crosswinds Farm in Belgium is an exclusive stable specializing in the development and sales of young Belgian, Dutch and German Warmbloods for the show jumping, equitation, and North American hunter markets.
Joining the fray? Marcella hears that John Canavan has been appointed as president of Stadium Jumping. Gene Mische was also re-elected by the board as chairman and chief executive officer. As president, John will be responsible for all administrative and business aspects for Stadium Jumping’s growing business needs for the highly anticipated move to its new location. We know John will do a great job.
HITS announced that Fred Bauer has been named Vice President West Coast Operations. Fred will become the face of HITS, connecting with trainers, owners and riders throughout the year as well as at the Thermal shows.
Caroline Moran, a top amateur owner competitor who has been champion at Devon for four of the past five years, has been invited to join the Horse Show Committee of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair.
Horse Shows: The Hampton Classic as usual has lined up a stellar list of sponsors, including a new kid on the block, FTI Consulting, the sponsor of the $150,000 FTI Grand Prix, the Classic’s featured event, held on Sunday afternoon, September 2. The Classic’s impressive sponsorship roster includes such long-time supporters as Calvin Klein (1980), Jaguar (1997), Land Rover (1989), David Yurman (1996), Manhattan Mortgage Company (1996), Sotheby’s International Realty (1999), and W`F6lffer Estate Vineyards (1991).
The Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic returns to the Cleveland Metropark Polo Field July 14-22. Organized by the nonprofit Chagrin Valley PHA Horse Show, Inc., the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic will begin with opening weekend competition on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15. The weekend is free and visitors can enjoy equestrian competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Calumet Farms, one of most historic and beautiful farms in Kentucky, generously opened their gates for fellow horsemen on Monday, May 14. Equestrians from the Kentucky Spring Horse Show had a chance to glimpse at one of the most successful racing operations in the world. Organized by Betsy Fishback, director of community relations for the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, equestrians were invited to take a driving tour of the farm, which includes over 800 acres. They saw numerous barns, horses breezing on the racetrack and brand-new foals frolicking in the pastures. Although the farm is not open for public tours, it was made available by Arianne de Kwiatkowski for exhibitors from the horse show.
New Baby Department: Lillian Baylor Geitner, "Lilly" was born on Tuesday May 15 to Daniel and Cathy Geitner in Aiken, S.C. She weighed 6 lbs 14 oz. Everything went very smoothly and Mom and baby are doing just fine. Dad, in fact, was already back showing in Atlanta at the Spring Premiere the following weekend where he took 3rd place in the $25,000 Grand Prix and earned Champion honors in the Classic Hunter 2’6" Division.
Catching Up: Congratulations to Arnie Bloom, new joint master of Why Worry Hounds in Aiken. Arnie and Clover Hill’s Silver Lining, better known around town as Eeyore, will be leading the field next season. Jeanie figured this was the best way to keep Arnie from going in early!
Another of our Aiken boys is shining on the national scene. Michael Tokaruk, of Tokaruk Show Stables LLC, will appear on not one, but two Dover Saddlery Catalogue covers in 2007: The Elite Hunter/Jumper Edition and Dover’s General Edition. We think this is a pretty big deal, since no other rider has ever appeared on both covers in the 25-year history of the company. The catalogues will be published simultaneously in June.
Congratulations to 10 year old Meg Baumgartner of River’s Edge Farm in Bethany, CT on her new medium pony What Luck. The two have already brought home ribbons and are looking forward to a fabulous summer. Head Trainer and owner Susan Horn has hired an assistant trainer and barn manager, Jamie MacCload, and they are already making plans for their USEF rated show on August 18. Speaking of horse shows, Susan had a close call on the way to Saratoga when one of her wheel bearings caught fire! Thanks to a watchful trucker who waved her over and put out the fire before any real damage was done, passengers and horses were all safe.
Sydney Masters-Durieux now has a beautiful four year old gelding that just arrived in the US from Belgium and settled into his new home at Soresi Show Stables in West Milford, NJ. After looking at the tape with her trainer, and relying all their advice and expert assistance, she decided to go for it! That was the easy part - The hard part was finding a name... although his Passport says Pulsion, Sydney and her husband Arnaud Durieux decided upon Zidane, (pronounced Z-Dan) named after the famed French World Cup Champion . . .
